Choose a display location by observing it throughout the day, not only when you first arrange the shelf. A corner that is shaded in the morning may receive direct sunlight later. Product-specific care instructions should guide the final location.
Watch the light move
Check the proposed spot in the morning, afternoon and at the time you normally use the room. Look for a direct beam reaching the shelf, including through a nearby doorway or reflected from another surface. A photograph taken once cannot show the full daily pattern.
If sunlight reaches the display, moving the shelf or choosing another wall may be simpler than relying on a cover you have to remember each day. A glass cabinet should not be assumed to protect a figure from every effect of sunlight.
Notice nearby heat sources
Look beyond the window. A radiator, heating vent, lamp or electronic device can affect the conditions around a display. Follow the clearance instructions for the equipment and avoid positioning figures directly against it or over an exhaust.
Do not invent a universal safe temperature or distance for every figure. Materials, paint, adhesives and construction differ. If a product has specific environmental guidance, use it. If it does not, ask the manufacturer or seller for advice relevant to that item.
Give storage the same attention
A display shelf may be comfortable while a storage area is hot or damp. Check the location used for boxed figures too. Avoid assuming that original packaging makes any storage environment suitable.
Good Smile Company's guidance for its own figures warns against high temperature and humidity and recommends a ventilated location away from direct sunlight and strong fluorescent light. It also advises against leaving its figures unopened for long periods. These are useful questions to consider, while checking the instructions for your particular product.
Build a location checklist
Before settling on a spot, answer: Does direct sun reach it? Is equipment warming the area? Can air circulate as required? Can I inspect and remove the figure easily? Are the base and shelf properly supported?
