Good display lighting makes the face, sculpt and colors easier to see. Begin with the room's existing light and add only what solves a specific problem, such as a shadow over the face or a dark rear shelf. More brightness is not always a better display.
Identify the missing detail
Look at the figure during the times you usually enjoy the display. If the face is in shadow, consider the direction of the light before increasing its strength. A lamp directly above the piece can emphasize the top of the hair while leaving the eyes dark.
Experiment with the lamp's position without touching the figure or its accessories. Compare the front, side and three-quarter view. Make the assessment from your normal viewing position rather than only while standing close to the shelf.
Control reflections and color
Glossy finishes and cabinet glass can reflect a light source. If a bright reflection covers the face, changing the light angle may help more than adding another lamp. Avoid aiming a light straight at the glass from your usual viewing direction.
Colored lighting can create a mood, but it also changes the apparent colors of paint. Use neutral-looking illumination when checking the product's appearance. Add color only if you prefer the effect, and keep a way to view the collection under ordinary room light.
Follow equipment and product instructions
Use lighting equipment appropriate for its location and follow its installation, ventilation and clearance instructions. Keep fixtures and wiring from resting against figures or obstructing supports. Do not assume any light is suitable for a closed cabinet simply because it is small.
Good Smile Company's care guidance for its figures recommends avoiding direct sunlight, strong fluorescent light, high temperatures and humidity. The exact requirements of your product and lighting equipment still come first; one manufacturer's advice is not a specification for every statue.
Test a simple setup first
Try one light position and take a photograph without a filter. Check the face, reflections on the cabinet and whether dark clothing still shows detail. Then inspect the physical arrangement again: cables should not become snag points when you remove a figure.
