Decide whether the character or scene comes first
Look at the figure without focusing on the surrounding effect. Is the expression, outfit and pose one you want to own? If so, decide whether the base supports that choice or distracts from it.

If the character and effect share similar colors, a plain contrasting background can help their outlines remain clear. If the base is already colorful and detailed, adding a busy printed backdrop may make the entire scene harder to read.
Test under ordinary room lighting before using colored lights. A strong color cast can change the appearance of painted effects and reduce contrast between the face, outfit and base. Decorative lighting is a preference, not a requirement for a good display.
Compare a solo scene with a small group
For one focal statue, give the effect room to form a complete silhouette. For a group, consider combining a more elaborate piece with quieter poses, or separating the figures into individual sections. You do not need every statue to have an equally large base.
